Microperimetry – A New Tool for Assessing Retinal Sensitivity in Macular Diseases

Memota Laishram, Krishnagopal Srikanth, AR Rajalakshmi et al. · 2017 · Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research

Introduction: Macular disease is the leading cause of low vision in the Western world. Drusen and pigmentary irregularities are common among the rural Northern Indian population. The disease process leads to loss of central vision, metamorphopsia, macropsia or micropsia and colour vision defect. Aim: To study the retinal sensitivity changes in macular diseases using microperimetry. Materials and Methods: It was an observational study, conducted in the Department of Ophthalmology at a rural tertiary care hospital. This study was started from December 2014 until June 2016, in all patients with m

Systemic inflammatory response to inhaled endotoxin does not correlate with airway response

Amika K. Sood, Allison J. Burbank, Michael Lawson et al. · 2019 · Respiratory Research

Abstract Background Endotoxin is a component of particulate matter linked to respiratory disease. Our group has shown that experimental endotoxin inhalation challenge reproducibly triggers neutrophilic inflammation in the airways and in peripheral blood. Sputum induction is currently the only available method for assessing airway neutrophilia but is laborious and time-consuming. This analysis examined the correlation between systemic and airway inflammatory responses to endotoxin to determine if peripheral blood could serve as a surrogate marker for neutrophilic airway inflammation. Methods We

Evaluation of influence of dissolved oxygen on corrosion behaviors of FeCrW model alloys in 360 °C water

Jun Yeong Jo, Chi Bum Bahn, Hwasung Yeom · 2024 · Nuclear Engineering and Technology

The dissolved oxygen in a coolant can affect the oxidation properties of structural materials. A desirable oxide phase formation is achieved by manipulating the oxygen level in the coolant, which can mitigate structural material degradation in nuclear power plants. Therefore, the role of dissolved oxygen in the corrosion of structural materials in aqueous environments needs to be understood. In this study, a short-term corrosion test (up to 300 h) of Ferritic/Martensitic steels (F/M steels; FeCrW model alloys), namely, Fe12Cr1W, Fe9Cr1W, and Fe9Cr, in stagnant water at 360 °C was performed in

Comparison of KIT patterns and infiltration of eosinophils in canine mast cell tumor

C.D. Araújo, G.S. Sanches, F. Borek et al. · 2023 · Arquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia

ABSTRACT KIT protein is associated with the etiology of canine mast cell tumors (MCT); however, the expression patterns of KIT are highly variable. The aim of this study was to determine if KIT patterns are related with eosinophil count in MCT. Hematoxylin eosin and May Grünwald-Giemsa stain techniques were applied, histological grading and eosinophil counting were performed in 48 MCT samples. Immunohistochemical evaluation was performed with IL-5, VEGFr, and c-KIT antibodies. The percentage of immunolabeling with IL-5 and VEGFr was determined, and the samples incubated with c-KIT were graded

Plasma Level of Oxidized Low- Density Lipoprotein in Macroalbuminuric

Manoochehr Nakhjavani, Firouzeh Asgarani, Fatemeh Esfahanian et al. · 2009 · Acta Medica Iranica

Accumulating evidence suggest that in patients with diabetes mellitus, increased rate of lipoprotein oxidation and oxidative stress have important role in diabetic angiopathy, including nephropathy. To evaluate the association of oxidized low- density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) with the development of diabetic nephropathy, plasma level of ox-LDL were measured in 70 diabetic patients with macro and 63 patients with normoalbuminuria. The plasma oxidized- LDL level in patients with macroalbuminuria was higher than those in normoalbuminuric group, (85.72 ± 32.92 mu/L versus 75.07 ± 26.46 u/L, P= 0.041).

Evaluation of a reproductive index for estimating songbird productivity: Case study of the golden‐cheeked warbler

Jennifer L. Reidy, Lisa O'Donnell, Frank R. Thompson III · 2015 · Wildlife Society Bulletin

ABSTRACT It is critically important to determine and understand relationships between endangered species populations and landscape and habitat features to effectively manage and conserve populations and the habitats they rely on. Several recent studies focused on the golden‐cheeked warbler (Setophaga chrysoparia), an endangered songbird that breeds exclusively in central Texas, USA, have used a reproductive index to link pairing and breeding success to various factors of interest. However, no field test has evaluated the performance of a reproductive index at estimating productivity of golden‐

Increased Circulating H3 Histone in Response to Repeated Bouts of Exercise Does Not Associate with Parallel Alterations of Cell-Free DNA

Robert Stawski, Konrad Walczak, Ewelina Perdas et al. · 2021 · Biology

Numerous studies have shown that cf nDNA significantly rises in stress caused by exercise. However, during nuclear decondensation, released DNA is followed by histones. Histones are also a common disease marker. After PAD4 mediated hypercitrullination extracellular H3Cit exhibits high toxicity contributing to tissue damage which, in cases of systemic inflammation, may lead to multiorgan failure and finally to death. We tested whether circulating histones rise in response to strenuous exercise. Eleven average-trained men performed three treadmill exercise tests to exhaustion at speed correspond

C-reactive protein levels and cognitive functions in patients with bipolar disorder

O. Elleuch, M. Maalej, W. Guidara et al. · 2023 · European Psychiatry

Introduction The pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD) is complex and remains uncertain to this day. Several hypotheses have been suggested, including the involvement of inflammatory mechanisms in its pathogenesis and in eventual cognitive impairment. C-reactive protein (CRP) is one of the most commonly used inflammatory markers. High-sensitivity CRP (hs- CRP) is a more sensitive marker. Objectives We aimed to examine hs-CRP levels in patients with BD, and to investigate its relationship with cognitive functions. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study between June 2016 and July 2018 o

GSDM gene polymorphisms regulate the IgE level in asthmatic patients.

Amer Imraish, Tuqa Abu-Thiab, Tareq Alhindi et al. · 2022 · PLoS ONE

Background Gasdermin A (GSDMA) and gasdermin B (GSDMB) have been associated with childhood and adult asthma in many populations including the Jordanian population. It is also known that IgE plays a crucial role in various allergic disorders, such elevated levels of total serum IgE were detected in asthma and allergic rhinitis. IgE immunoglobulin is responsible for the release of numerous inflammatory mediators, such as histamine and prostaglandins, from mast cells in asthmatic patients. Objective In this study, single nucleotide polymorphisms of GSDMA (rs7212938, T/G) and GSDMB (rs7216389, T/C

In recent years, multiple wells in the Sichuan Basin have produced industrial gas from the marlstone/marl-bearing limestone strata in the first member of the Middle Permian Maokou Formation (Mao 1), demonstrating promising exploration potential. Previous studies have suggested that the marlstone/marl-bearing limestone in Mao 1 exhibits self-generation and self-storage characteristics, forming low-porosity, low-permeability fracture-porosity type tight carbonate reservoirs with diverse storage spaces. Notably, diagenetic shrinkage pores and fractures formed during the transformation of sepiolit
