COVID-Related Chronic Allograft Dysfunction in Lung Transplant Recipients: Long-Term Follow-up Results from Infections Occurring in the Pre-vaccination Era

René Hage, Macé M. Schuurmans · 2022 · Transplantology

Introduction: We report on characteristics and lung function outcomes among lung transplant recipients (LTRs) after COVID-19 with infections occurring in the first year of the coronavirus pandemic prior to introduction of the vaccines. Methods: This was a retrospective study of 18 LTRs who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 between 1 February 2020 and 1 March 2021. The mean age was 49.9 (22–68) years; 12 patients (67%) were male. Two patients died due to severe COVID-19. Results: During the study period, there were 18 lung transplant recipients with a community-acquired SARS-CoV-2 infection. In th

Effectiveness of injected versus topically applied platelet-rich plasma in diabetic foot ulcers: A randomized controlled trial with clinical and histopathological assessment

Mohamed Nasr, Moustafa AH El-Nawasany, Haytham E Ali et al. · 2025 · JPRAS Open

Background: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious complication of diabetes that can lead to significant morbidity. Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP), rich in growth factors and cytokines, has emerged as a promising treatment to enhance ulcer healing. This study aimed to compare the clinical and histological efficacy of injected PRP versus topically applied PRP and traditional wound care in the management of DFUs. Methods: Sixty patients with DFUs were randomly assigned to three equal groups (n = 20 each). Group A received locally injected autologous PRP; Group B received topically appl

Comprehensiveness of online sources for patient education on otosclerosis

Ahmet Adnan Cırık, Yeşim Esen Yiğit, Ahmet Mahmut Tekin et al. · 2024 · Frontiers in Surgery

PurposeThis study aimed to assess the readability indices of websites including educational materials on otosclerosis.MethodsWe performed a Google search on 19 April 2023 using the term “otosclerosis.” The first 50 hits were collected and analyzed. The websites were categorized into two groups: websites for health professionals and general websites for patients. Readability indices were calculated using the website https://www.webfx.com/tools/read-able/.ResultsA total of 33 websites were eligible and analyzed (20 health professional-oriented and 13 patient-oriented websites). The Role of Late-Onset Inflammatory Markers in the Prediction of Complications and Graft Survival after Pancreas Transplantation

Sandro Hügli, Philip C. Müller, Matthias Pfister et al. · 2023 · Transplantology

Background: Despite great progress in graft survival and complication rates, pronounced inflammatory responses are common after pancreas transplantation (PT). Subsequent to the first postoperative increase in inflammatory markers, we have frequently observed a second peak of C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cells (WBCs) following PT. This analysis is to assess the incidence and clinical relevance of late-onset increases in inflammatory markers following PT. Materials and methods: We analyzed all consecutive PTs over a 20-year period. The second peak of CRP (SCP) and WBCs (SWP) was defi

A new proposal for laparoscopic left colectomy in a rat model

Leonardo de Castro Durães, Eliana Ferreira Ribeiro Durães, Pedro Felipe Silva de Freitas et al. · 2013 · Acta Cirúrgica Brasileira

PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of a new technique for laparoscopic segmental colectomy and primary anastomosis in the left colon of rats. METHODS: Thirty rats were randomly assigned to three groups of ten animals each. All animals underwent segmental resection of the left colon and end-to-end anastomosis. In Group I, the animals underwent laparoscopic surgery with carbon dioxide pneumoperitoneum at a pressure of 5 mmHg. In Group II, the animals underwent pneumoperitoneum with carbon dioxide at a pressure of 12 mmHg. In Group III, the control group, the animals underwent open s

Experimental dry socket: microscopic and molecular evaluation of two treatment modalities Alveolite experimental: análise microscópica e molecular de duas modalidades de tratamento

Camila Lopes Cardoso, Osny Ferreira Júnior, Paulo S. Perri de Carvalho et al. · 2011 · Acta Cirúrgica Brasileira

PURPOSE: To evaluate two treatment modalities of dry socket in rats and to discuss the first findings of the molecular analysis in this experimental model. METHODS: 84 rats underwent a tooth extraction were divided in 4 groups: I-uninfected socket (control), II-infected socket without any treatment, III-infected socket treated with irrigation of 2% sodium iodide and 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, IV-infected socket submitted to curettage, irrigation with physiological saline solution and fulfilled with metronidazole paste as base. The groups were subdivided in postoperative sacrifice periods:

Novel calcaneal plate versus traditional philos plate for treating split fractures of humeral greater tuberosity

Fei Wang, Xiaohui Niu, Haibo Xia et al. · 2024 · Frontiers in Surgery

PurposeTo compare the effect of two internal fixation methods of calcaneal plate fixation and Philos plate fixation in treating split fractures of humeral greater tuberosity.Patients and methodsA total of 37 patients with split fractures of humeral greater tuberosity were retrospectively analyzed from September 2016 to April 2021. Enrolled patients were divided into Group A (calcaneal anatomical locking plates), and Group B [Proximal Humeral Internal Locking System (PHILOS)]. Safety and Efficacy of Pelvic Reinforcement Procedure for Preventing Postoperative Perineal Hernia After Robotic Abdominoperineal Resection: A Single‐Center, Retrospective Cohort Study

Yoshihiro Sakai, Shunsuke Kasai, Akio Shiomi et al. · 2026 · Annals of Gastroenterological Surgery

ABSTRACT Aim Few reports have described pelvic reinforcement procedure (PRP) to prevent perineal hernia (PH) in robotic abdominoperineal resection (Ro‐APR) for rectal cancer. This study aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of PRP in Ro‐APR. Methods Patients who underwent Ro‐APR for rectal cancer between January 2020 and June 2023 were retrospectively examined. PRP was performed as a prophylactic procedure for PH. Four types of PRP were performed depending on the case (closure of the levator ani muscles, the pelvic peritoneum with the uterus, the pelvic peritoneum, and the pelvic perito

Incidence, Risk Factors, and Prevention Strategy for Proximal Junctional Kyphosis in Adult Spinal Deformity Surgery

Tsuyoshi Sakuma, Toshiaki Kotani, Tsutomu Akazawa et al. · 2021 · Spine Surgery and Related Research

Introduction: Proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) is an acute complication of adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery and may require re-operation because of proximal junctional failure (PJF). PJK causes and prevention strategies remain unknown. This study aimed to investigate the differences in the backgrounds of patients with PJK, compared to those without PJK, in ASD surgery. Methods: We included data from 86 patients who underwent ASD surgery between 2012 and 2018. There were 40 patients (46.5%) with PJK; 46 patients did not have PJK until the last follow-up. We evaluated patient demographics,
