Abstract The development of deep learning (DL) models to predict the consensus molecular subtypes (CMS) from histopathology images (imCMS) is a promising and cost-effective strategy to support patient stratification. Here, we investigate whether imCMS calls generated from whole slide histopathology images (WSIs) of rectal cancer (RC) pre-treatment biopsies are associated with pathological complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant long course chemoradiotherapy (LCRT) with single agent fluoropyrimidine. DL models were trained to classify WSIs of colorectal cancers stained with hematoxylin and eosin

Hemodialysis‐associated muscle cramps (HAMC) are a common complication during hemodialysis (HD) sessions. A number of pharmacologic agents have been evaluated to prevent and or diminish HAMC; however, none of them has an established role. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate the possible effect of gabapentin on HAMC. In a double-blinded clinical trial, we compared the possible effect of gabapentin with a placebo in prevention and or diminishing episodes of HAMC in HD patients who had experienced frequent intradialytic muscle cramps. At first, placebo was given befo

Abstract Although incompletely understood, microbiota-host interactions are assumed to be altered in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We, therefore, aimed to develop a novel analysis pipeline tailored for the integrative analysis of microbiota-host interactions and association to symptoms and prove its utility in a pilot cohort. A multilayer stepwise integrative analysis pipeline was developed to visualize complex variable associations. Application of the pipeline was demonstrated on a dataset of IBS patients and healthy controls (HC), using the R software package to analyze colonic host mRNA a

When discussing the association between birth weight and air pollution, previous studies mainly focus on the maternal trimester-specific exposures during pregnancy, whereas the possible associations between birth weight and weekly-specific exposures have been largely neglected. We conducted a nested 1:4 matched case-control study in Jinan, China to examine the weekly-specific associations during pregnancy between maternal fine particulate matter (aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 μm, PM _2.5 ), nitrogen dioxide (NO _2 ), and sulfur dioxide (SO _2 ) exposure and birth weight, which is under a represen

Background and aimThe Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) recently proposed a new malnutrition diagnostic tool known as the GLIM criteria. The GLIM criteria need confirmed validation before being widely used in each population or healthcare system. This study aimed to investigate the validation of the GLIM criteria for malnutrition diagnosis in hospitalized patients.MethodsThe content validity was assessed by calculating the content validity ratio (CVR) and content validity index (CVI). Subjective global assessment (SGA) is considered the reference tool to diagnose malnutrition

Background: It is well-established that patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) have a less favorable prognosis if a concomitant full-thickness cartilage lesion is present at the time of surgery. However, the long-term benefits of surgically addressing these cartilage lesions remain uncertain. Purpose: To evaluate whether the most used surgical treatments for cartilage lesions influenced patient-reported outcomes 10 years after ACLR. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. Methods: This study was based on a cohort of all patients with primary unilateral A

Safe and effective vaccination remains the mainstay of control of COVID-19 because there is still no universally recommended treatment. This strategy is however being threatened by vaccine hesitancy and resistance due to fear of adverse events and safety concerns. It is, therefore, necessary to study post-vaccination adverse events (AE) in various populations and geographical areas. The objective of this study was to analyze the adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination in five major immunization centers of Kwara State Nigeria. Abstract Introduction Although the role of dengue virus (DENV)‐specific T cells in the pathogenesis of acute dengue infection is emerging, the functionality of virus‐specific T cells associated with milder clinical disease has not been well studied. We sought to investigate how the functionality of DENV–NS3 and DENV–NS5 protein‐specific T cells differ in patients with dengue fever (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). Methods Using intracellular cytokine assays, we assessed the production of interferon γ (IFNγ), tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α), macrophage inflammatory protein‐1β (MIP‐1β), a

Abstract Background The Apo-1/Fas (CD95) molecule is an apoptosis-signaling cell surface receptor belonging to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor family. Both Fas and Fas ligand (FasL) are expressed in activated mature T cells, and prolonged cell activation induces susceptibility to Fas-mediated apoptosis. The Apo-1/Fas gene is located in a chromosomal region that shows linkage in multiple sclerosis (MS) genome screens, and studies indicate that there is aberrant expression of the Apo-1/Fas molecule in MS. Methods Mva I polymorphism on the Apo-1/Fas promoter gene was detected by PCR-RFLP

We included only non-pregnant adult diabetic persons 18 years or older. Participants who had vitamin D level less than 20 ng/ml were considered as having vitamin D deficiency. Participants were considered to have a glucose control if the HbA1c level was less than 7% [53 mmol/L]. We used student’s t test to compare the difference in HbA1c means between people with Diabetes with and without a vitamin

Abstract Sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass and function, is a significant health concern in middle-aged and older adults, potentially linked to adverse outcomes like falls and fractures. A cohort study was conducted utilizing participants aged ≥ 45 years from CHARLS. Sarcopenia was defined using established criteria. Primary outcomes were isolated falls, isolated hip fractures, and composite outcomes. Associations were assessed using multivariable Cox regression (adjusted for confounders), propensity score matching (PSM), and inverse probability weighting (IPW), reporting hazard

Abstract Vitamin D and calcium in follicular fluid play an important role in modulating steroidogenesis, folliculogenesis, and oocyte quality determination. Both collaborate to produce top-quality embryos (TQE) during in vitro fertilization (IVF). In this study, we compared free 25(OH)D3 and calcium levels in follicular fluid between TQE and non-TQE groups. This cross-sectional study included women who underwent IVF procedures at tertiary hospitals in Bandung, Indonesia. Ovarian follicular fluid was collected during the ovum pick-up procedure. Abstract Background Central nervous system depressant medications (CNSDs) such as opioid analgesics and sedative-hypnotics are commonly prescribed to older patients for the treatment of chronic pain, anxiety and insomnia. Yet, while many studies reported potential harms, it remains unknown whether persistent use of these medications is beneficial for older patients’ self-reported health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The present study clarified this knowledge gap through comparing HRQoL of hospitalized older patients with versus without using CNSD drugs for ≥4 weeks. Moreover, we explored th

Lactoferrin (LTF) gene polymorphism was obtained with PCR-RFLP method using EcoRI enzyme. Two alleles of LTF, A and B, were found in the studied population. Their frequencies were 67.74% and 32.56%, respectively. The alleles controlled the occurrence of three genotypes: AA, BB and AB, of frequencies equal to 37.90%, 2.42% and 59.68%, respectively. It was established that statistically significant associations exist between the somatic cell count (SCC) and LTF genotype, lactation month

Some of these polymorphisms may be risk factors for the development of primary congenital hypothyroidism (PCH). In this study, we investigated the relationship between the frequency of TSHR gene polymorphisms and the genetic influence of African, Amerindian, and European ancestry-informative markers in patients from an Amazonian population in Brazil who were diagnosed with PCH.
