Failure-mode index

Search what already failed

A searchable index of real negative results, null findings, and replication failures from the published literature — so you can learn what didn't work before repeating it.

WASTE indexes published research — it does not host or republish full papers. Each entry is a metadata record (title, authors, DOI) compiled from open scholarly databases, with the abstract shown in full only where the paper is openly licensed (e.g. Creative Commons); otherwise a short excerpt is shown for reference under fair use. WASTE classifies each work by failure type; classifications are automated and approximate.

Apolipoprotein E promoter genotypes are not associated with white matter hyperintensity development in high-altitude careers

Richard R. Chapleau, CharLee A. Martin, Summer R. Hughes et al. · 2019 · BMC Research Notes

Abstract Objective This study sought to determine if there is an association between variants in the apolipoprotein E (ApoE) promoter regions and development of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) in military subjects who have been exposed to high altitude. In an earlier study, we found that ApoE status did not correlate with WMH development, and here we hypothesized that regulation of APOE protein expression may be protective. Results Our cohort of 92 subjects encountered altitude exposures above 25,000 feet mean sea level through their occupations as pilots or altitude chamber technicians. U

Search for the Decay $τ^{-}\to 4pi^{-}3π^{+}(π^{0})ν_τ$

CLEO Collaboration, K. Edwards et al · 1997 · arXiv

We have searched for the decay of the tau lepton into seven charged particles and zero or one pi0. The data used in the search were collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.61 fb^(-1). No evidence for a signal is found. Assuming all the charged particles are pions, we set an upper limit on the branching fraction, B(tau- -> 4pi- 3pi+ (pi0) nu_tau) < 2.4 x 10^(-6) at the 90% confidence level. This limit represents a significant improvement over the previous limit.

Revisiting the Role of Vitamin D in Fracture Prevention in the Era of Mega-Trials

Sung Hye Kong · 2026 · Endocrinology and Metabolism

For decades, vitamin D has been a cornerstone of preventive medicine. However, recent large-scale randomized controlled trials have failed to replicate the broad benefits previously observed in epidemiological studies, particularly with respect to fracture and fall prevention in vitamin D-replete populations. Moreover, growing evidence suggesting an increased fall risk associated with high-dose bolus administration has necessitated a re-evaluation of safety assumptions. This review synthesizes these discordant findings to propose a framework grounded in precision medicine. We explore the ‘dive

Calculations of optical rotation: Influence of molecular structure

Yu Jia, Cao Yu, Song Hang et al. · 2012 · Journal of the Serbian Chemical Society

Ab initio Hartree-Fock (HF) method and Density Functional Theory (DFT) were used to calculate the optical rotation of 26 chiral compounds. The effects of theory and basis sets used for calculation, solvents influence on the geometry and values of calculated optical rotation were all discussed. The polarizable continuum model, included in the calculation, did not improve the accuracy effectively, but it was superior to γs. Optical rotation of five or sixmembered of cyclic compound has been calculated and 17 pyrrolidine or piperidine derivatives which were calculated by HF and DFT methods gave a

Patent Foramen Ovale and Stroke–Current Status

Oh Young Bang, Mi Ji Lee, Sookyung Ryoo et al. · 2015 · Journal of Stroke

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is growing in clinical interest because of a renewed focus on embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS), the PFO attributable fraction (the 10-point Risk of Paradoxical Embolism score), technical advances in PFO diagnosis, and the emergence of endovascular device closure as a treatment option. However, recent randomized controlled trials of the management of patients with ESUS and PFO failed to demonstrate the superiority of closure over medical treatment. The mechanisms of stroke other than paradoxical embolism may be important in patients with ESUS and PFO. This
