Failure-mode index

Search what already failed

A searchable index of real negative results, null findings, and replication failures from the published literature — so you can learn what didn't work before repeating it.

WASTE indexes published research — it does not host or republish full papers. Each entry is a metadata record (title, authors, DOI) compiled from open scholarly databases, with the abstract shown in full only where the paper is openly licensed (e.g. Creative Commons); otherwise a short excerpt is shown for reference under fair use. WASTE classifies each work by failure type; classifications are automated and approximate.

A comprehensive evaluation of early potential risk factors for disease aggravation in patients with COVID-19

Qiang Tang, Yanwei Liu, Yingfeng Fu et al. · 2021 · Scientific Reports

The 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) has become an unprecedented public crisis. We retrospectively investigated the clinical data of 197 COVID-19 patients and identified 88 patients as disease aggravation cases. Compared with patients without disease aggravation, the aggravation cases had more comorbidities, including hypertension (25.9%) and diabetes (20.8%), and presented with dyspnoea (23.4%), neutrophilia (31.5%), and lymphocytopenia (46.7%). These patients were more prone to develop organ damage in liver, kidney, and heart (P < 0.05). A multivariable regression analysis showed that adv

The beneficial effect of probiotics in the prevention of irinotecan-induced diarrhea in colorectal cancer patients with colostomy: a pooled analysis of two probiotic trials (Probio-SK-003 and Probio-SK-005) led by Slovak Cooperative Oncology Group

Michal Mego, Barbora Judita Kasperová, Jozef Chovanec et al. · 2024 · Frontiers in Oncology

Background: Probiotics could decrease irinotecan-induced diarrhea due to the reduction of intestinal beta-d-glucuronidase activity. This study included a combined analysis of two clinical trials aimed to determine the effectiveness of the probiotics in the prophylaxis of irinotecan-induced diarrhea in metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Methods: This combined analysis included 46 patients with CRC enrolled in the Probio-SK-003 (NCT01410955) and 233 patients from Probio-SK-005 (NCT02819960) starting a new line of irinotecan-based therapy with identical eligibility criteria. Trichoderma in Sustainable Agriculture and the Challenges Related to Its Effectiveness

Karina Gutiérrez-Moreno, Ana Isabel Olguín-Martínez, Amelia C. Montoya-Martínez et al. · 2025 · Diversity

Fungi from the genus Trichoderma have been extensively studied and used as biological control agents (BCAs) because of their versatile mechanisms of action. These include triggering systemic resistance, directly inhibiting pathogens, promoting plant growth, enhancing tolerance to abiotic stress, and producing auxins. However, the widespread application of the most studied Trichoderma strains has been limited by discrepancies between their potential results observed in controlled environments and the outcomes in greenhouses and field conditions. These differences are associated with context dep

Cell Migration–Proliferation Dichotomy in Cancer: Biological Fact or Experimental Artefact?

Abdulaziz Alfahed · 2024 · Biology

The migration-proliferation dichotomy (MPD) has long been observed in cultured cancer cells. This phenomenon is not only relevant to tumour progression but may also have therapeutic significance in clinical cancer. However, MPD has rarely been investigated in primary cancer. This study aimed to either confirm or disprove the existence of MPD in primary cancer. Using primary gastric, colorectal and prostate cancer (GC, CRC and PCa) cohorts from the Cancer Genome Atlas and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, this study interrogated the MPD phenomenon by utilising RNA-Seq-based proliferation

Examining the impact of corporate social advocacy (CSA) issue ownership and message content on authenticity perceptions and behavioral intentions

Holly Overton, Michail Vafeiadis, Pratiti Diddi et al. · 2025 · Corporate Communications An International Journal

Purpose As companies continue to engage in CSA, they continue to struggle with determining what issues they should speak out about and how they can create compelling messages that inspire action. Guided by arguments from issue ownership theory, this study examines CSA message content effects related to two different social-political issues on advocacy behavioral intentions, megaphoning, brand preference and purchase intention. Specifically, the level of advocacy in a CSA message is examined, as well as the manner in which the message is written (narrative vs informational). Furthermore, this s

Vitamin D and Chronic Disorders: A Review of Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases

Ewelina Młynarska, Wiktoria Lisińska, Katarzyna Hossa et al. · 2025 · Pharmaceuticals

Vitamin D, long recognized for its essential role in calcium-phosphate balance and bone health, has increasingly been identified as a pleiotropic regulator of metabolic, cardiovascular, and renal function. Deficiency of vitamin D is widespread worldwide and has been linked to a higher risk of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease. Meta-analyses suggest that each 10 nmol/L (≈4 ng/mL) increase in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is associated with about a 4% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, whereas other analyses indicate an approximately

Effects of Dietary Interventions on Cognitive Outcomes

Judith Charbit, Jean‐Sébastien Vidal, Olivier Hanon · 2025 · Nutrients

Cognitive aging is a complex, multifactorial process influenced by genetic, metabolic, and environmental factors. Among modifiable risk factors, nutrition has emerged as a promising target to preserve cognitive function. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of dietary interventions-including specific nutrients and dietary patterns-on cognitive domains (memory, executive function, global cognition) and mental health. Recent findings: multinutrient supplementation, particularly combinations of B vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids, appears beneficial for episodic memory, espe
