Mitochondrial DNA heteroplasmy in diabetes and normal adults: role of acquired and inherited mutational patterns in twins

Gal Avital, Mor Buchshtav, Ilia Zhidkov et al. · 2012 · Human Molecular Genetics

Heteroplasmy, the mixture of mitochondrial genomes (mtDNA), varies among individuals and cells. Heteroplasmy levels alter the penetrance of pathological mtDNA mutations, and the susceptibility to age-related diseases such as Parkinson's…

The relationship between real GDP, CO 2 emissions, and energy use in the GCC countries: A time series approach

Cosimo Magazzino · 2016 · Cogent Economics & Finance

This paper examines the relationship among real GDP, CO2 emissions, and energy use in the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Using annual data for the years 1960–2013, stationarity, structural breaks, and cointegration tests have been conducted. The empirical evidence strongly supports the presence of unit roots. Cointegration tests reveal the existence of a clear long-run relationship only for Oman. Granger causality analysis shows that for three GCC countries (Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar) the predominance of the “growth hypothesis” emerges, since energy use drives the real GDP. Moreov

Comprehensive assessment of multiple biases in small RNA sequencing reveals significant differences in the performance of widely used methods

Carrie Wright, Anandita Rajpurohit, Emily E. Burke et al. · 2019 · BMC Genomics

BACKGROUND: RNA sequencing offers advantages over other quantification methods for microRNA (miRNA), yet numerous biases make reliable quantification challenging. Previous evaluations of these biases have focused on adapter ligation bias with limited evaluation of reverse transcription bias or amplification bias. Furthermore, evaluations of the quantification of isomiRs (miRNA isoforms) or the influence of starting amount on performance have been very limited. No study had yet evaluated the quantification of isomiRs of altered length or compared the consistency of results derived from multiple

Prehospital plasma is associated with distinct biomarker expression following injury

Danielle S. Gruen, Joshua B. Brown, Francis X. Guyette et al. · 2020 · JCI Insight

BACKGROUNDPrehospital plasma improves survival in severely injured patients transported by air ambulance. We hypothesized that prehospital plasma would be associated with a reduction in immune imbalance and endothelial damage.METHODSWe sampled blood from 405 trauma patients enrolled in the Prehospital Air Medical Plasma (PAMPer) trial upon hospital admission (0 hours) and 24 hours post admission across 6 U.S. sites. We assayed samples for 21 inflammatory mediators and 7 markers associated with endothelial function and damage. We performed hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) of these biomark

Novel HER2-Directed Treatments in Advanced Gastric Carcinoma: AnotHER Paradigm Shift?

Angela Dalia Ricci, Alessandro Rizzo, Fabiola Lorena Rojas Llimpe et al. · 2021 · Cancers

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is overexpressed and/or amplified in approximately 15–20% of gastric adenocarcinoma (GC) patients. In 2010, the landmark ToGA trial established the combination of trastuzumab plus chemotherapy as the first-line standard of care for HER2-positive GC patients with advanced disease. However, subsequent studies on HER2 targeted therapies in this setting failed to meet their primary endpoints, and not all HER2-positive GC patients benefit from targeted approaches. More recently, novel HER2-directed treatments have been investigated, including trastuzu

ITPKC Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Associated with the Kawasaki Disease in a Taiwanese Population

Ho‐Chang Kuo, Kuender D. Yang, Suh‐Hang Hank Juo et al. · 2011 · PLoS ONE

Kawasaki disease (KD) is characterized by systemic vasculitis with unknown etiology. Previous studies from Japan indicated that a gene polymorphism of ITPKC (rs28493229) is responsible for susceptibility to KD. We collected DNA samples from 1,531 Taiwanese subjects (341 KD patients and 1,190 controls) for genotyping ITPKC. In this study, no significant association was noted for the ITPKC polymorphism (rs28493229) between the controls and KD patients, although the CC genotype was overrepresented. We further combined our data with previously published case/control KD studies in the Taiwanese pop

Cardiovascular risk prediction in type 2 diabetes: a comparison of 22 risk scores in primary care settings

Katarzyna Dziopa, Folkert W. Asselbergs, Jasmine Gratton et al. · 2022 · Diabetologia

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: We aimed to compare the performance of risk prediction scores for CVD (i.e., coronary heart disease and stroke), and a broader definition of CVD including atrial fibrillation and heart failure (CVD+), in individuals with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Scores were identified through a literature review and were included irrespective of the type of predicted cardiovascular outcome or the inclusion of individuals with type 2 diabetes. Performance was assessed in a contemporary, representative sample of 168,871 UK-based individuals with type 2 diabetes (age ≥18 years without pre-existi

Reducing the Intensity and Volume of Interval Training Diminishes Cardiovascular Adaptation but Not Mitochondrial Biogenesis in Overweight/Obese Men

John Colin Boyd, Craig A. Simpson, Mary E. Jung et al. · 2013 · PLoS ONE

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to determine if the adaptations to high intensity interval training (HIT) are mitigated when both intensity and training volume (i.e. exercise energy expenditure) are reduced. METHODS: 19 overweight/obese, sedentary males (Age: 22.7±3.9 yrs, Body Mass Index: 31.4±2.6 kg/m(2), Waist Circumference: 106.5±6.6 cm) performed 9 sessions of interval training using a 1-min on, 1-min off protocol on a cycle ergometer over three weeks at either 70% (LO) or 100% (HI) peak work rate. RESULTS: Cytochrome oxidase I protein content, cytochrome oxidase IV protein co

Taranum Ruba Siddiqui, Saima Ghazal, Safia Bibi et al. · 2016 · PLoS neglected tropical diseases

BACKGROUND: Prevention is most effective in reducing dengue infection risk, especially in endemic countries like Pakistan. Evaluation of public awareness and health beliefs regarding dengue fever (DF) is important for devising disease control strategies. This study assessed dengue knowledge, health beliefs, and preventive practices against DF in different socioeconomic groups of Karachi, Pakistan. METHODOLOGY: In this community-based cross-sectional study, 6 randomly selected towns were visited, 2 persons (man and woman) per household were interviewed using a structured questionnaire, and hous
