Most plantations of cactus pear are not irrigated in Morocco and fruits are tiny. The impacts of irrigation during flowering (FLO) and fruit growth (FRG) on fruit yield and quality were monitored along two years on three varieties of cactus pear. In 2011, irrigation treatments were: T1 (0 mm), T2 (30 mm during FLO and 30 mm during FRG) and T3 (30 mm during FRG only). In 2012, irrigation treatments increased to 60 mm during FLO and FRG. The irrigation treatments were applied in 8 (T3) or 16 (T2) watering, once every three days. Interactions between varieties and treatments were significant for

Abstract Background Muscle growth depends on the fusion of proliferate satellite cells to existing myofibers. We reported previously that 0–14 day intermittent feeding led to persistent retardation in myofiber hypertrophy. However, how satellite cells respond to such nutritional insult has not been adequately elucidated. Results One-day-old broiler chicks were allocated to control (Con, ad libitum feeding), intermittent feeding (IF, feed provided on alternate days) and re-feeding (RF, 2 days ad libitum feeding after 12 days of intermittent feeding) groups. Chickens were killed on Day 15 and sa

Objective: To investigate the impact of laser-assisted hatching (LAH) on clinical outcomes in patients undergoing frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) cycles with embryos at different developmental stages. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 2208 patients who underwent vitrification-thawed FET at our reproductive center between October 2018 and June 2024, with some patients contributing multiple cycles. Patients were stratified by embryonic developmental stage into cleavage-stage FET (n = 793) and blastocyst-stage FET (n = 1415) groups. Each group was further subdivided based on p

Improvements in stocks and stability of forest soil organic carbon can be achieved through the management of tree species. Given the long lifespan of trees and their role as the keystone species in forested ecosystems, decisions regarding tree species management can have a significant impact on soil carbon balance, with effects that may persist for decades. Here, a common garden experiment involving five temperate tree species in northeast China was conducted to quantify the influence of tree species on soil carbon dynamics, including its fractions (mineral-associated organic carbon, particula

This study examines the acoustic properties of vowels in foreigner-directed speech (FDS) in interactions between female Omani-Arabic-speaking employers and their foreign domestic helpers (FDHs). Particularly, it investigates whether Arabic corner vowels /i:/, /a:/, and /u:/ undergo acoustic adaptations in FDS. The study also explores the influence of foreign interlocutors’ psycholinguistic characteristics, such as degree of foreign accent, religion, and length of residence (LoR), on the extent of these adaptations. Data were collected from 22 Omani-Arabic-speaking women interacting with their

Abstract Background Data are limited on the benefits and risks of dose reduction in managing side effects associated with antipsychotic treatment. As an example, antipsychotic dose reduction has been recommended in the management of tardive dyskinesia (TD), yet the benefits of lowering doses are not well studied. However, stable maintenance treatment is essential to prevent deterioration and relapse in schizophrenia. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted to analyze the healthcare burden of antipsychotic dose reduction in patients with schizophrenia. Medical claims from six US stat

Mifepristone dramatically increases the life span of mated female Drosophila while reducing the expression of innate immune response genes. Previous results indicated that mifepristone also reduced the load of aero-tolerant bacteria in mated females. Experiments were conducted to further investigate the possible role of bacteria in mifepristone life span effects. Life span was assayed in flies grown from sterilized eggs on autoclaved media and in normally cultured controls in two independent assays. Sterilization increased mated female life span (+8.3% and +57%, respectively), and the effect o

As a natural flavoring agent, vanilla essential oil has a special aroma and flavor, but its volatility and instability limit its value. Therefore, in this study, vanilla essential oil was compounded with cinnamon essential oil to prepare nano-emulsions (composite nano-emulsions called C/VT and C/VM), and the stability of the composite essential oil emulsions was investigated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that the nano-emulsions were spherical in shape and some flocs were observed in C/VM and C/VT. High-voltage spindles (HVSs) have been reported to appear spontaneously and widely in the cortical-basal ganglia networks of rats. Our previous study showed that dopamine depletion can significantly increase the power and coherence of HVSs in the globus pallidus (GP) and motor cortex of freely moving rats. However, it is unclear whether dopamine regulates HVS activity by acting on dopamine D₁-like receptors or D₂-like receptors. We employed local-field potential and electrocorticogram methods to simultaneously record the oscillatory activities in the GP and primary motor cortex (M1) in freely

Nevertheless, whether this unfavorable effect of HHcy on circulating EPCs also exists in premenopausal women is still unknown. Therefore, this leaves an area for the investigation of the difference on the number and activity of circulating EPCs in premenopausal women with hyperhomocysteinemia and its underlying mechanism. The number of circulating EPCs was measured by fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis, as well as DiI-acLDL and lectin fluoresce

Introduction: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive technique used to modify the activity of the cortex of the brain. This form of current is capable of inducing changes in the electrical activity inside and outside of the neurons, which leads to a change in the resting membrane potential and thus improves the efficiency of the neural synapse. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of tDCS over motor cortex on strength and endurance performance of healthy collegiate subjects. ABSTRACT Dietary inclusion of lipid sources has been one of the methods adopted by nutritionists aiming at better energy balancing. However, alternative energy feedstuffs have been sought in an attempt to reduce production costs. In this regard, lipid sources that can replace conventional ones, such as beef tallow, cottonseed oil, and sunflower oil have been investigated. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of different lipid sources on the performance, egg quality, biometrics of digestive organs, and bone quality of white-egg commercial layers in the first production cycle.

In civil engineering, arches, such as steel arch roofs and arch bridges, are often subjected to linear temperature gradient field. It is known that the in-plane instability of parabolic arches is caused by the significant axial force. The arch under the linear temperature gradient field produces complex axial force, and so the instability of arches would be affected by temperature gradient field significantly. However, the analytical solutions of in-plane instability of parabolic arches being subjected to the uniformly distributed vertical load and the temperature gradient field are not solved
