Impact of different saturated fatty acid, polyunsaturated fatty acid and cholesterol containing diets on beta-amyloid accumulation in APP/PS1 transgenic mice

M. Oksman, H. Iivonen, E. Hogyes et al. · 2006 · Neurobiology of Disease

The present study assessed the influence of dietary lipids on accumulation of amyloid beta-peptide (Aβ) in the brain. Seven experimental diets with varying n-6/n-3-ratio, saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid and cholesterol contents were fed to transgenic APPswe/PS1dE9 mice for 3–4 months beginning at a young adult age (6 months). Hippocampal Aβ levels were determined with ELISA and plaque load by using immunocytochemistry. A typical Western diet with 40% saturated fatty acids and 1% of cholesterol increased, while diets supplemented with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) decreased Aβ levels comp

The efficacy of a range of hygiene measures for boot cleaning to protect natural vegetation from Phytophthora cinnamomi

Edward C. Y. Liew, Maureen Phelan, Keith L. McDougall · 2023 · Scientific Reports

Abstract Phytophthora cinnamomi is an oomycete found in the soil and capable of invading the roots of a wide range of host plants globally, potentially killing them and affecting the ecosystems they inhabit. This pathogen is often inadvertently dispersed in natural vegetation on the footwear of humans. A range of equipment is often provided or recommended to be carried for cleaning footwear in places where P. cinnamomi poses a threat to biodiversity. These are typically a brush for mechanically removing soil and/or a disinfectant for killing the pathogen. Despite their widespread use, to our k

LY2495655, an antimyostatin antibody, in pancreatic cancer: a randomized, phase 2 trial

Talia Golan, Ravit Geva, Donald Richards et al. · 2018 · Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle

Abstract Background Cachexia is a formidable clinical challenge in pancreatic cancer. We assessed LY2495655 (antimyostatin antibody) plus standard‐of‐care chemotherapy in pancreatic cancer using cachexia status as a stratifier. Methods In this randomized, phase 2 trial, patients with stage II–IV pancreatic cancer were randomized to 300 mg LY2495655, 100 mg LY2495655, or placebo, plus physician‐choice chemotherapy from a prespecified list of standard‐of‐care regimens for first and later lines of care. Investigational treatment was continued during second‐line treatment. The primary endpoint was

Failure of bumetanide to improve outcome after intracerebral hemorrhage in rat.

Cassandra M Wilkinson, Brittany A Fedor, Jasmine R Aziz et al. · 2019 · PLoS ONE

After intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), brain edema commonly occurs and can cause death. Along with edema, there are significant alterations in the concentrations of key ions such as sodium, potassium, and chloride, which are essential to brain function. NKCC1, a cation-chloride cotransporter, is upregulated after brain damage, such as traumatic injury and ischemic stroke. NKCC1 brings sodium and chloride into the cell, possibly worsening ion dyshomeostasis. Bumetanide, a specific NKCC1 antagonist, blocks the transport of chloride into cells, and thus should attenuate the increases in chloride,

H-coil repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation does not improve executive function in patients with chronic peripheral neuropathic pain: a randomized sham-controlled crossover study

Nadine Farnes, Nadine Farnes, Henrik B. Jacobsen et al. · 2024 · Frontiers in Psychiatry

IntroductionDeep rTMS is an increasingly popular noninvasive brain stimulation technique which has shown promise for treating cognitive impairments. However, few studies have investigated the cognitive effects it could exert in patients with chronic peripheral neuropathic pain. Therefore, we aimed to assess the effects of deep rTMS on executive functioning in patients with peripheral neuropathic pain, in a randomized, double-blind crossover trial.MethodsIn total, 17 patients were randomly assigned to receive both active and sham deep H-coil rTMS targeting the primary motor cortex. Each treatme
