Abstract Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) production in Japan faces major challenges from virus yellows (VY), caused by beet leaf yellowing virus (BLYV) and transmitted by aphids. Outbreaks have reduced sugar yields, and breeding for tolerant varieties has not been conducted in Japan.
