Abstract Mathematical models in engineering play an important role in understanding and predicting the behavior of a system. A mechanistic coupled liquid water, water vapor and heat transfer model incorporating kinetic phase change accounting for real‐time interfacial area between water and gas phases was developed to predict coupled subsurface processes and evaporation (drying) rates from bare soils.
