Failed Synthesis of High-Temperature Superconducting Material via Novel Dopant Approach

Abstract

We report an unsuccessful attempt to synthesize room-temperature superconductors using a novel nitrogen-doping approach in copper oxide lattices. Despite promising theoretical predictions based on DFT calculations, experimental results showed no superconducting transition above 40K.

Our approach involved systematic doping of YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) with nitrogen at various concentrations (0.1-5% molar). Samples were prepared using solid-state synthesis at temperatures ranging from 800°C to 1100°C under controlled atmospheres.

The failure appears to be related to the instability of nitrogen incorporation in the copper oxide lattice at high temperatures, leading to nitrogen loss before superconducting phases could form. This finding suggests that alternative synthesis routes (e.g., low-temperature methods or in-situ doping) may be necessary to explore nitrogen-doped high-Tc superconductors.
